Halfway through Casey's pregnancy, she learned that her unborn son had a very rare, very serious heart defect. Untreated, the condition would be terminal.
Children's Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock teamed up with Children's Hospital Boston to provide the best care for Parker: prenatal and follow-up care at CHaD, and three open-heart surgeries at Children's to improve his health. Casey and her husband Keith supported the partnership. "We wanted to give our son the best odds possible," she said. "We had realized, doing our own research, that Children's Hospital Boston was No. 1 for this heart defect."
Parker's doctors at CHaD communicate frequently with his doctors in Boston to ensure that everyone has the latest information.
"The communication has been great," Casey said. "In the past two-and-a-half years that we've been going between CHaD and Boston, there hasn't ever been a lapse in communication. They're always on the same page so we never have a question in our mind about his care . . . it seems like the cardiologist in New Hampshire and the cardiologist in Boston are one and the same as far as direction, course of action, where we go from here."
"All of Parker's specialists are here in New Hampshire," Casey said. "We're able to have all of his appointments here locally for his endocrinologist, his GI specialist, his cardiologist, his pediatrician . . . We're very fortunate that we don't have to drive to Boston for all of his appointments, because he does have many."
"I just feel very comfortable with everybody that's caring for Parker," Keith said. "I'm just very happy that he's being seen at CHaD and also at Children's in Boston."
Parker's story is just one example of the world-class collaboration that has existed between both hospitals for years. On June 21, 2011, they formalized that relationship, enabling them to make the most of specialized care at Children's Hospital Boston and the convenience of expanded care right here in New Hampshire.
